Defining the Challenge

User Experience means everything to us. Ranging from the aesthetic taste to the comfort of being on the wheelchair to the dynamics of propulsion. We make sure everything is align with what the user need. Thus, We have brought in multiple users to identify the most challenging problem in manual wheelchair design.

Difficulty with Propelling

The slide contacting method of conventional wheelchair makes wheelchair user hard to grab on the rims of the wheel. Often causing hand-burns and jamming their fingers

Inefficiency

Arms are not designed for pushing. On average, wheelchairs are only 2-10% efficient. This makes task like going up the ramp very difficult.

Arthritis

Over half of the user report deterioration in shoulder muscle causing osteoarthritis. The motion of propeling is equivalent to pushing 32-40% of their weight causing significant stress on their cartilage muscles

conventional wheelchairs are only 2-10% efficient.

Conventional wheelchairs are inefficient because the user does not have full contact with the wheel, rather they slide the rim. Through rotating with the smaller inner circle, the user has a better grip to propels forward with improved efficiency by 80% with a reduction in energy by 40%. The aerodynamic design of the wheelchair and the driving mode allows the user to propel at an ergonomic and optimal dynamics.

Innovation

Thinking outside the box.

Instead of pushing on the rims on a wheelchair, which is inefficient, user rotates the handle on the wheelchair that is connected to a bike rolling chain. This allows the user to have a better grip and rotating in a smaller continuous circular motion, reducing initial inertia and overcoming barriers like moving up a ramp.

Smaller, Lighter... Better.

The cap of the wheel also provides an arm rest for the user. In addition. the cap seperates the cloth from jamming into the wheel. Making SHIFT a much safer and comfortable experience for the User. SHIFT Model 2 (Left Image) is also 30% narrower and fits right under 5kg. Making the wheelchair more portable and lighter than SHIFT Model 2
