PROBLEM

- THE NORTH WOOD FACTORY -

In this busy routine that we live in, we often compromise healthy living as a necessity in our well-being. The living network that is breaking down is the balance between working and healthy diet. 36.6 percent of adults - about one in three adults - consumed fast food, including pizza, on a given day (USA Today). Thus, the need for healthy diet and living calls us to research in why we are moving away from traditional cooking.

KEY CONCEPT

This design project will revolve around designing an digital platform/interface for a smart fridge. Samsung recently designed this innovative smart hub concept with digital camera integrated inside the fridge. However, the system could be improved to recognize food by including a scanner which will help the fridge to register all the foods you have stored. The fridge will then use your list to generate recipe recommendations and personalization for your healthy diet.

Digital Storyboard.jpg

1. User scan their QR Code of the product using the scanner on the fridge.

2. Based on your registered food, the fridge generates recommendation recipe.

SMART RECOMMENDATIONS

The internally built camera and QR code scanner will register the food you bought in the database. You will scan the food before putting in the fridge and the fridge will provide smart recommendation of recipe based on your ingredients.

PERSONALIZATION

Exploring how to include the feature to personalize your recipe recommendation will be key element to maintaining the user's interest in cooking individually.

USER EXPERIENCE

How do we simplify the cooking process, and improve the user experience when cooking? Making the use of most efficient time and management.

WHAT DOES THE CURRENT FOOD RECIPE LANDSCAPE LOOK LIKE?

To understand the design problem, we have to look into the different opportunities into the concept. While there are alot of food recipe app created,  I believe they lack the most important factor "motivation" to keep the user engaged. The Fridge digital platform will be able to counter this limitation by engaging with the user whenever they interact with the fridge, seeing food recipe recommendations directly based on what you have in the fridge.

USER RESEARCH

By performing qualitative and quantitative research methods, we can get insights in understand the user's perception of cooking experience and enhance it in our app.

"How often weekly do you cook and eat at home?"

Data is sampled from Report Linker based on 502 online respondent representative of the general US Population. Survey conducted between November 11th and November 15th, 2016.

"How much time do you spend on average on cooking?"

While it is hard to focus on improving consuming food and cleaning up. The two most promising area to improve user experience is "thinking about what to eat" and "Food Preparation". Users spend over two third of the time on preparation than eating.

"Where do you mostly find inspiration for cooking?"

Understanding the motivation behind what engages the audience to cook will help developing the app. From the 502 survey audience, it is clear that the two most important element is "cheap" and "health".

SETTING UP THE STRUCTURE

By researching various quantitative and qualitative measure, we have determined that the user habit with their motivation behind. In this, we have choreograph how the user will be interacting with the tablet from the home screen. This detailed account includes what the user see and the actions involved.

"The best products don't focus on features, they focus on clarity"

The challenge of UI/UX design is not all about creating the best feature, but also creating the most simplistic platform for the user to use. The question we should always ask is "how does the user get from point A to point B intuitively".

Dark Color Theme

Research from NIH shows that food intake was significantly increased with red and black plate  (1102KCal/day) compared to that of food on white plate (~945KCal/day). (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5911375/). Thus, food with black theme greatly increase the user's appetite.

User Homepage

The homepage is often the most important page in interface design. It is crucial to make the homepage interactive and simple so the user has a good sense of direction of where to go. In this design, the most important feature will be the recommendation food recipe based on the ingredients in your fridge. And the way, the app makes it clear is to have three different modes: "Cook - ingredients I have" "Recommend - Ingredients I might be able to make" "Prepare - Ingredients I need to buy". The design also incorporates a simple swipe up to view feature, allowing simple access with a big picture of the food to appeal to the user.

View Recipe

Traditional recipe are very straightforward and unappealing for visualization. It is often for logistics and not designed in an aim for the user to navigate. Thus, good design also requires to create an athetically pleasing way to present informations.

Personalization

Recipe are designed with the intent that the user can personalize their menu. The default would always be recommendations from the ingredients they have in the fridge. After clicking on the recipes, the app will record their selection and generate more similar recipe based on algorithm. The "recent" tab is a quick access for user to make their past meals, with updates from their subscribed chef/menu.

Notification tab located right beside the search button pops up when foods are about to expire. When the user scan their food, it keeps track of their expiration date. So the app will automatically warn the user if their food is expiring within 3 days. By clicking on the expiring soon button, it will lead you to another homepage where it will suggest other recipes you can make with these ingredients. This prevents food waste while still providing excellent choices for the user.
